Thousands have taken up beekeeping in Ireland this year alone, in a drive to save the environment — but does a huge surge in honey bees really help wild pollinators that compete with them for food?

There is a real buzz in the back gardens of Ireland right now, as beekeeping, a practice that was in danger of dying out by the end of the 20th century, undergoes a big revival. This year alone, thousands of new beekeepers are thought to have started producing their own honey to help fight the feared collapse of the planet’s pollinator population.

“People want to feel that they are doing something,” says Francis Nesbitt, who runs courses in beekeeping and small-holding at Croan House, in Co Kilkenny. “It can seem too much to attempt to tackle climate change on your own, so people do these things to make themselves feel that they are making a bit of a difference.
