Why does Sakurai see the awesome trailers as essential for Smash?
Ever since Super Smash Bros. 4, Nintendo has been utilizing exciting trailers to reveal new fighters. Most of these showcases go heavy on the CG animation, and incorporate actual gameplay of the character.
In a recent column from Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai, we learn more about the reasons these trailers are created and used for reveals, as well as how they’re made. Thanks to Push DustIn, we have English translations to read over.
These trailers are created in order to make something that fans will enjoy, and also create buzz about the new additions. Sakurai writes all of the trailer scripts, plus where they’ll be cut, and ends up wearing many hats when it comes to their production.
Sakurai also writes the words for each trailer, and leaves room for where the gameplay should be added in. The dialogue is always important to have, plus the music choice must be just right.
In particular, Smash for 3DS/Wii U utilized a company called Digital Frontier for assistance with the trailers. Yoei Shimozawa directed many of the trailers at the company.
Shimozawa hears exactly how a trailer is desired and which parts should be CG. This leads into the creation of a storyboard, animation, and more.
Sakurai has continued the tradition of big reveal trailers for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, bringing fans some of the best and most memorable announcements seen in recent times. From Ridley taking out Mario and Mega Man to Banjo-Kazooie faking out King K. Rool, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong, the Smash Bros. Ultimate trailers remain just as effective as those that preceded them.
Sakurai feels that these trailers are important to the fans of the characters and series, and says that he is deeply grateful to work on them.
