The Kansas City Chiefs offense set the tone early in their first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals with three straight passing plays — and answered the Bengals’ opening drive touchdown.
Mahomes then completed a pass toSammy Watkinsfor seven yards, and then came a 23-yard catch and run by tight end Blake Bell.
After getting to the goal line by coaxing the Bengals defense offsides — and a 10-yard scramble by Mahomes —Carlos Hydepunched it in with a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7 with 4:01 left in the first quarter.
The drive went for 83 yards and took seven plays, taking just 3:47 off the clock.
But since the Bengals had chewed up more than seven minutes on their opening touchdown drive, there wasn’t enough time left in the first quarter for the fans to see more from the reigning NFL MVP. That was it for Mahomes and most of the first-team offensive players.
Mahomes left the game with a a perfect stat line: 4/4 for 66 yards.
